The city of Jaboatão dos Guararapres deserves to be very well studied when it comes to public education. A few years ago, we visited that city, as a teacher, accompanied by our students, to learn about some innovative projects developed there, which had gained prominence in the books adopted by our disciplines, which aroused great interest in the class, which had debated these projects in the classroom. It would be a unique opportunity to get to know these experiences up close, solving doubts and consolidating knowledge.
With the same purpose, we went to the city of Icapuí, in Ceará, then administered by a priest, who received us with great affection, with an unusual promptness. But, let's talk about the experience of Icapuí in another opportunity. What most caught our attention in these innovative education projects in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes was their inspiration, conceived on a theoretical basis that brought them closer to a Socialist Pedagogy, in the style, amazingly, of the Cuban education model, when the municipality's administration it was in charge of Mayor Geraldo Mello, a former PMDB militant, who, as a communist, did not have much.
I ask my dear readers to be careful with the expression "communist" used by this editor, since the term goes through a process of "vulgarization" and, worse, "criminalization". - in view of the disregard for public education of some of our managers - that the funds destined for this sector would be systematically being diverted to non-republican purposes - according to the suspicions of the Federal Police, the Federal Comptroller General and the Public Ministry. , a thinker and statesman of public education, like Anísio Teixeira, in the year of his centenary of birth, would be appalled by these facts, given the purpose of his life, to make public education universal, of quality for all and destined to consolidate the democracy in the country.
But there are also reasons to make you happy in this year of your centenary. Public education in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes received the second award from the UN, due to the good projects developed there, with the objective of meeting the demands of impoverished students. Jaboatão was the only municipality contemplated in the entire continent of South America. In 2017 the municipality began to develop a program, together with public schools that house the most fragile students, with the purpose of making them competitive to compete for the competitive places of the federal and state technical schools. Result: 86% of these students passed the contest, which is undoubtedly a great success, crowning the efforts of teachers, other public agents involved and the public administration, currently exercised by Mayor Anderson Ferreira (PL-PE).
As it is said here, all the ends of the skein were duly found, that is, whenever a problem arose - as in the case of the Covid-19 Pandemic - the solutions appeared, without failing to meet the objectives. Classes started on Saturdays, then became regular, even through whatsapp groups. The serious problems of digital exclusion - which penalizes needy students much more - were also circumvented by the government, as I said, preventing any part of the skein from being adrift. The result is there.
